Examining how constitutional structures, civic institutions, and local governance can function effectively and earn public trust.
Valley Forge, Pennsylvania
Forging practical, resilient solutions for American self-government.
The Valley Forge Policy Institute conducts rigorous research and analysis to strengthen American institutions, self-governance, and prosperity. Drawing on the historic example of endurance and professionalization at Valley Forge, we develop evidence-based policy solutions, educate leaders and the public, and advance practical approaches that preserve constitutional principles and improve outcomes for American communities.
About the Institute
In the winter of 1777–78, General George Washington's Continental Army encamped at Valley Forge. Through hardship, scarcity, and cold, the army endured—and emerged in the spring a more disciplined, capable fighting force.
Much of that transformation came through the work of Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, who introduced standardized drill, training, and organization. Valley Forge became a turning point not because of a battle won, but because of an institution strengthened through patience, rigor, and professionalism.
The Valley Forge Policy Institute takes that lesson as its founding principle: durable institutions are built, not inherited. We aim to bring the same commitment to discipline and practical improvement to the policy questions facing American communities today.
